Snickers Super Bowl Web site promotes violence against gays?
I didn't watch the SuperBowl. I don't dig sports and I don't know enough to follow them on "special" nights either. I could be part of the many to watch just for the commercials and half time show but iiick..nah..I just couldn't be bothered. So apparently there was a commercial that came on for Snickers.
Instead of me explaining the commercial - watch it below -
So all in all the commercial itself isn't too controversial. It's just kind of stupid. What I didn't like (and I'm not alone) was the Snickers websites that have the various NFL players watching the commercial and reacting badly. VISIT THE SITE HERE. Now I'm not always one to jump on the band wagon that just because you are a public figure you have to be a role model but this public homophobia is just not sitting well with me. Bears Tight End Desmond Clark said on the site "Did they actually have to kiss like that? I hope they got paid a lot of money to do that." Another player bluntly states that it just "ain't right". I don't care if it's "right" or not. I don't think one way or the other Snickers or the NFL should be slinging their opinion. Think of all the young kids growing up who look up to these sports figures. Some of these kids might actually be gay and to see their hero publicly condemn them. Not good not good.
There are also 3 alternate endings that the viewer on the website can watch. After you watch all three, you can vote to see which version gets played during the Daytona 500. After the kiss, the guys have to "do something manly" - in one version they quickly resort to gay stereotypes after another man who sees the kiss walks by effeminately and asks is there is "room on this love boat", the other chooses violence to solve the issue and the last one has the two characters drinking motor oil and anti-freeze. So "manly men" drink anti-freeze and motor oil? Or is poisoning your self better than being gay?? WTF. I just do not get it at all.
UPDATE: AS I TYPE THIS I AM UNABLE TO ACCESS THE PLAYER VIDEOS AND THE ALTERNATE ENDINGS THAT I'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT. PERHAPS SNICKERS HAS GOTTEN A CLUE AND REMOVED THEM??
UPDATE 2: THE SNICKERS SITE HAS BEEN UPDATED. YOU CAN NO LONGER VIEW THE CONTROVERSIAL AD. THE POWER OF OUR VOICE IS STRONG. WOOT!
Read two very interesting articles here at Americablog and Towleroad. Both blogs cover the story very very well. I hope they pull this ridiculous ad campaign immediately. This type of thing would never happen if the issue was race. However, in America, it's still ok to publicly and CORPORATELY blast gays. Enough is enough. Snickers and the MARS company can forget my business. It's no longer theirs to be had.
