In New York City, we have skyscrapers, we have rivers that run on either side of the busy island, we have beautiful bridges connecting the outer boroughs and we are soon to get our own waterfall. You read that correctly - a waterfall. A huge art project is set to premiere in Lower Manhattan in Mid-July created by artist Olafur Eliasson. Eliasson is most well known for his "Weather Project" that he did outside the Tate Modern in London. The "Weather" installation consisted of a giant sun made of 200 yellow lamps in addition to mirrors and mist.
Christo and Jeanne-Claude's Central Park installation "The Gates" was the last major scale art project that was presented in the city. The waterfalls will rise to between 90 and 120 feet and will be illuminated at night. You'll be able to catch a glimpse of these huge creations from the South Street Seaport. Mayor Bloomberg said in a recent statement "The waterfalls project will bring a sense of awe back to the harbor and encourage all of us to see a familiar part of our city in a completely new way." I'm so looking forward to this! It sounds amazing. Projects like this are another reason that I love New York so much. xox.
